Determination of the coal swelling index (SI)

Standards:

PN-ISO 501:2007 ‘Węgiel kamienny - Oznaczanie wskaźnika wolnego wydymania’.
ISO 501:2003(E) ‘Hard coal – Determination of the crucible swelling number’.
The device is used to test the impact of heating on increasing the plastic volume of coal. It consists of three autonomous assemblies which make it possible to carry out individual stages of the research process:

• A resistance furnace where the sample under preparation is heated, in accordance with the set programme, so that it can move freely in a direction perpendicular to the heated surface.
• An observation station used to evaluate the swelling index (SI) of the cooled sample, in accordance with the procedure.
• A station for classifying samples as S1 or S½.
